The primary purpose of the Assistant Director of Nursing position is, under the leadership of the Director of Nursing, assume management and leadership of the Nursing Department in accordance with the Deaconess mission philosophy and as directed by the Director of Nursing. The Assistant Director of Nursing performs selected acts for the promotion of health and in the care of persons who are ill, injured, or experiencing alterations in the normal health process. The Assistant Director of Nursing may act on behalf of the Director of Nursing, as delegated by the Director of Nursing, for defined periods of time. The Assistant Director of Nursing is delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

Job Requirements

. Participate in the development and evaluation of care delivery systems.

  • Participate in the establishment of clinical goals and mechanisms to address departmental and nursing unit needs and deficiencies.

  • Participate in the development of and supports management goals for the Nursing Department based on assessed departmental needs/deficiencies.

  • Assist Director of Nursing with the interview, hire, discipline, evaluation, and termination process for any employee under the supervision of this position.

  • Supervise and evaluate staff and provide information in reference to evaluation and progress to the Director of Nursing. Counsel and write Corrective Actions and provide information to Administrator and Director of Nursing.

  • Participate in the establishment of and supports implementation of policies specific to the Nursing Department.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Nursing and other nursing leadership in the development of and presentation of proposals concerning issues in the delivery of care which affect the Nursing Department and other departments.

  • Participate in the development and implementation of new programs.

  • Participate in the development of standards of care and care-specific issues including, restraints and restraint alternatives, incontinence management, wound care, restorative nursing.

  • Work with the Director of Nursing to screen products and provide evaluation of these prior to purchase.

  • Develop mechanisms to assure that pharmaceuticals and care supplies are available and current. Monitor medication administration for appropriateness and institute corrective measures, as indicated.

  • Interpret staffing/budgetary policies and procedures and stay within budgetary parameters. Evaluate resident care needs to assure that staffing requirements are met.

  • Participate in the yearly review of the facility, specialty units, and programs, making recommendations in changes of standards of care and goal-setting, as indicated.

  • Conduct utilization review for the Medicare skilled units as indicated and in accordance with Medicare procedures.

  • Monitor general and care-specific standards and recommend corrections for problems identified.

  • Work with Social Services during the admission process and assure a smooth admission process and assessment. Recommend and implement correction of problems identified in the admission process.

  • Develop with the DON and implement policies and procedures regarding physical and chemical restraints and facilitate restraint reduction and restraint alternatives, as appropriate.

  • Under the direction of the DON, supervise personnel with respect to accountability for performance including hiring, training, discipline, counseling performance evaluations, grievance procedures, staffing levels, and other related personnel functions in order to improve service levels

  • Communicate the facility philosophy, mission statement, goals of the facility, and goals of the Nursing Department and provide appropriate feedback to the management team.

  • Maintain current information regarding delivery of long term care and other pertinent services.

  • Act as a liaison with the medical staff regarding resident care issues.

  • Ensure that all safety protection programs are clearly outlined and that all personnel are following the program as it relates to fire prevention, safety ergonomics, hazardous chemical usage, disposal and storage, updating and staff education in the use of the MSDS manual, and all general maintenance safety procedures and devices. Report any contrary conditions to the Administrator and implement steps to correct problems.
